1st June 1859

From the Journal of Lt. Lempriere, RE, from the trail near Hope.

1st Wednesday – Struck camp about 8 a.m. and went on about 4 miles and camped close to some beautiful falls, the gorge was so narrow that there was not sufficient space to pitch my tent properly.

The trail was very rough and the ascent up the mountain very steep: one of my pack mules rolled down a considerable distance, they did not get along at much more than 1 mile per hour.

Note: Since the majority of the Columbia Detachment were under canvas - the ubiquitous British Army bell tent - our research lends itself to the fact that the Detachment must have purchased HBC/Miners tents for the small survey parties it sent out in 1859.
