4th June 1859

From the Journal of Lt. Lempriere, RE, from the trail near Hope.

4th Saturday – The steamer "Governor Douglas" arrived at Fort Hope.  I received an official stating that the Governor was perfectly satisfied with everything I had done with regard to the trail and that he intended sending me an NCO and 6 sappers by the next trip of the steamer –

I sent my letter to Belle.

Note: At this early time period in the relationship between the RE and the Governor, Mr. Douglas fell into the habit of treating the Detachment as a direct extension of his control of the Colony.  He was either unclear or disregarded the "chain of command" used by the military and this lead to some uncomfortable situations for the Men when caught between the Governor and their Colonel.
